The American Revolution was just months old, necessitating that "two battalions of Marines be raised" to defend the country by land, by sea, by whatever means necessary to ensure our freedom. From that day forward, the Marines have been a distinctive - and distinguished - branch of the United States military, with a global reach far beyond the Pennsylvania street where the tavern stood until it burned down in 1781.
