Arriving to the United States in 1876, George T. Morgan helped with the redesign of U.S. coinage as an assistant engraver at the U.S. Mint. His ability ultimately allowed him to become the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint in February 1917. He worked on designs for the half dollar, new Liberty and more. Breaking with tradition, Morgan wanted an American woman to depict Liberty rather than the old Greek-style images and he used schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams as his model to create new Liberty patterns for the Mint to choose from.
